Thanks for the Feedback: The Science and Art of Receiving Feedback Well

Douglas Stone & Sheila Heen

An individual’s ability to constructively receive feedback is highly correlated to their career success. Both giving and receiving feedback are tricky tasks. Before delving into this book, I was unaware that feedback fell into three groups—appreciation, coaching, and evaluation. There’s so much to learn in Thanks for the Feedback by Douglas Stone and Sheila Heen. The authors tackle individual triggers that pertain to truth, relationships, and identity when feedback is given. They provide tips for navigating the feedback conversation with the ultimate goal of learning something valuable (p 229). Some necessary dynamics for individuals and organizations to embrace when providing feedback are growth mindsets and learning cultures.
